history • Sara was born into the perfect family. She was an only child, and she grew up in the tiny town of Mi Wuk, California. As soon as she could walk, she learned to go hiking, and soon her second home was in the mountains, along with her parents. For the first eight years of her life, Sara was completely happy, and perfectly healthy... Well, almost. She did have the occasional stomachache or rash, but it was no problem to her or her parents, so they ignored it.
A few weeks after her eighth birthday, everything changed, however. Sara and her parents had been on a car trip to San Francisco, and there they had indulged in a large, freshly-baked loaf of bread. A few moments after they finished their meal, Sara started feeling short of breath. She started wheezing, then fell over, having blacked out. Her parents were so very worried, and they had no clue what they could do about it. Luckily, one of the people in the restaurant was a schoolteacher who had delt with allergic reactions once or twice. This man managed to get them an epipen, and he saved Sara's life by injecting her.
Her parents took her to the doctor, who started doing blood tests right away. The results didn't look all too good. It turned out then that Sara had Celiac's Disease, as well as a level 6 allergy to gluten. The doctor suggested that they find Sara a service dog, a 'nanny' of sorts that could watch what the girl ate. Since Sara was only eight at the time, she had no clue what was happening, but when her parents talked to her about it, the only thing she heard was 'Puppy!' Her parents had never let her have a pet, and so this thought took over in her mind.
Well, that was when her first service dog came into her life. She stayed at the facilities of the agency that was registered to train allergy alert dogs, and at the end of a month's learning, she was allowed to come home, with a three-year-old Malamute in tow. She was overjoyed, and her mother was just happy that she would be safe.
Her father, however, was a different story. The past two months had been hard on him, and he didn't have the energy to go on taking care of a 'special needs' child, as he put it. He left Sara and her mother, and soon divorced the woman who had borne him an imperfect child. This was a heavy blow to both Sara and her mother, but they struggled on, working through it together.
After two years, Sara's mother fell for a man who lived not far from Mi Wuk, in a place called Strawberry. He ran the local stables, and gave tours into the mountains. This was where Sara learned to ride, and she loved it from the first moment she was up on a horse. She would often saddle up the horse that her step-father had 'assigned' to her, a calm old mare, and ride out for the entire day, or sometimes her mother and step-father would come along for a two-day trip.
This was the time Sara learned about reining. She started training in the sport when she was twelve, and proved to be a natural at it. For her thirteenth birthday, her step-father and mother bought her an acclaimed show horse that had to be sold for financial reasons. Sara and her new horse hit the show world around Northern California, taking it by storm.
When she was looking for a college, during her senior year of high school, Sara heard about Park Equine College. Her mother and step-father talked it over, and decided that they could pull together the money to send her there. However, there was one condition. She would have to finance her own allowance, and a way to get herself and her horse to the school.
